Working from a cafe

Sometimes we may find ourselves working when out-and-about including from your local cafe.

The most creative thoughts can flow when sipping on a hot cup of tea, listening to mellow jazz vibes!

No matter where we find ourselves working, taking control of privacy ensures the protection of confidential information and respects the personal space and information of people.

Whilst a cafe provides a relaxed environment it’s not a place to let down your guard when it comes to potential security risks.

Public Wi-Fi

Cybercriminals could potentially intercept data transmitted over public Wi-Fi networks.

Hotspot your laptop to your phone to create a safe network but if using up your data is an issue for you, use a VPN.

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) encrypts your data, making it difficult for cybercriminals to access it.

If it’s essential to use the cafe’s Wi-Fi, hop on quickly to download emails or documents, then disconnect.

Save your financial transactions, or anything requiring you to enter personal information, until you get onto your home Wi-Fi.

Oversharing information

Cafes often attract like-minded individuals, providing opportunities for networking and collaboration, and they offer an alternative workspace for those who prefer to work outside the traditional office.

It’s easy to leave your screen unlocked when you head to the counter to order another brownie or when you pop to the loo. So, lock before you step away! Take your phone with you and do everything you can to prevent it taking a dive into the toilet bowl!

Having a confidential conversation from a cafe is not a great idea, anyone can overhear and use that information for their own gain.

In summary

By taking control of a how you connect to the internet, what you do when connected, and the conversations you have in public, are all great privacy measures to take when you work from a cafe.
